Over a month, energy output decreased sharply
In April 2025*, output went down again sharply in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (‑5.0% after ‑2.1%) because of a sharp decrease in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (-5.5% after -2.2%): this month was characterised by particularly mild temperatures, making April 2025 the fifth warmest April since 1900. Output fell back in the manufacture of transport equipment (‑2.4% after +2.6%): it fell back sharply in the “other transport equipment (manufacture of aircraft, building of ships, manufacture of railway locomotives, etc.)” (‑3.7% after +2.2%) and slightly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (‑0.4% after +3.4%). Output fell back strongly in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (‑14.0% after +9.4%) and more modestly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (‑1.9% after +0.1%).
On the contrary, output bounced back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.1% after ‑0.9%) and increased again in the “other manufacturing industries (manufacture of basic metals, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc.)” (+0.3% after +0.2%).

* All data in this publication are seasonally and working days adjusted (SA-WDA). In the commentary, percentage changes by sub-branches are presented, with some exceptions, in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a sub-branch takes into account its weight and the scale of its change.
The methodology used to build and calculate the industrial production index (IPI) is detailed in the “Documentation” tab of this publication.
